Dovizioso plays down works ride rumours

By Toby Moody Friday, March 21st 2008, 17:39 GMT

Andrea Dovizioso's manager has played down rumours in the Italian press that the JiR Team Scot rookie is line to replace former world champion Nicky Hayden in the factory Repsol Honda squad in 2009.

Doviziozo, a former 250cc race winner, impressed on his debut in the senior class, finishing fourth after coming out on top in a wheel-to-wheel dice with his hero Valentino Rossi at Qatar.

A loyal Honda man since he made his 125cc world championship debut in 2002, the Italian is seen as a rising star among the ranks of the Japanese manufacturer's rider roster. And speculation is growing that Honda is keen to support him with a works ride in 2009 as reward for his rides on uncompetitive Honda 250cc machinery over recent seasons, should Hayden choose to leave HRC.

Doviziozo's manager Simone Batistella told autosport.com that he had not been approached however and that there was no substance to the rumours.

"Nothing has been discussed at all," said Batiztella. "We haven't spoken to anyone about anything. Everything is as it was before the season started. We are just concentrating on every race doing the best that we can."

Hayden's current two-year contract with HRC runs out at the end of 2008.

For kicks, I'd rather see Hayden on the Factory Kawasaki on the indestructible Bridgestone tires than on a third party customer Ducati, especially when it'll be KR's first year learning the Duck. That's if Honda doesn't retain his services on the Works team or after Nakano leaves in 2009. Ant West is being scrutinized this year, so I have a feeling he'll be gone. The only thing that might be sticky is Hayden's relationship with Hopkins. They're not best friends that's for sure.

talk about jumping to conclusions. it's only the first race. any speculation that honda is upset with hayden is just that. for god's sake. they put up with biaggi longer... and he didn't win them a championship.

and where are the rumors of kr going with ducati come from??? unless i hear it from domenicali or senior himself, i don't believe it.

Re KR & Ducati, there were many posts here during the off season about KR possibly racing a Ducati engine in 2008.

There were quotes from KR & Ducati along the same lines.

Forget the exact details, but it is likely it would have gone ahead this year, (KR racing at least a Ducati engine) if he had sponsorship squared away.

The reports of a relationship between KR & Ducati were not from some journo merely interviewing his own typewriter.

Biaggi had how long on a Factory Honda now? I don't think so...?

Hayden got less love than "the midget" from HRC immediately after he won them a title. I suspect he needs to take the rumours very seriously.

But, yeah, let's see how the season goes. I just hope Nicky leaves HRC no matter HOW things end up.

Hi guys, first post although I have been visiting this site almost daily since following an Ant West trail here in the middle of last year...

Here is my left field idea....Bayliss is off the factory Ducati WSBK ride at the end of year....Hayden takes this for a year and depending on performance, steps into MotoGP ride the year after when Melandri is off contract.

well thought scenario

if kr didn't get it done this year what makes u think he'll be able to do it next year???

also, ducati has a hard enough time getting parts to their satellite. having a third team to support is easier??? even the behemoth that is honda couldn't keep up with parts last year.

Surprised. When will Melandri's contract expire?

The word is Melandri is contracted to Ducati in 2008 & 2009.

Although not sure about exits and options

Dear oh dear ...

One 'night' race and the seat swapping notions are already on the agenda.

Dovi is as you know my 'silent assassin' candidate ... but planning a change before the 'day' racing results are in ... oh please ... Rolling Eyes

Nicky ... well if ever an award is given for ' a slap in the face ' i say we give it to HRC.

Herb ... if your reading this ... and you see Nicky walking past ...
please say something in his ear about a ride next year ...

Failing that, i stick by my option #2 -

Team KR and Nicky Hayden announce return to MotoGP in 2009
