an interesting bit from Repsol...

The penultimate race in 2009 is in Malaysia, one that is held at the spectacular track of Sepang and in the most extreme conditions of the whole championship. The suffocating heat, combined with the humidity of a tropical country, make it into an endurance test for the riders, where the smallest detail is important and a race that needs a thorough preparation.

Dani Pedrosa & Andrea Dovizioso are in good physical shape for the 16th race of the season, very important for such a demanding race. Malaysia is just north of the equator in south-east Asia and so there are two seasons - one wet and the other a bit drier, the temperature is relatively stable, between 25 - 30ºC, with a high relative humidity. They are significant variables to bear in mind when practising sport at the highest level, as dehydration becomes the big enemy.

Dehydration risk
Dehydration under these conditions, means that the riders lose strength, their pulse rate and body temperature are higher, causing exhaustion. This is because the body produces more sweat as it tries to cool it down and so the riders lose electrolytes and salt. In a race they can lose up to 1.5 - 2 kg of liquid. This is easily recovered but when making an effort can cause a greater level of exhaustion, cramps and lower concentration, so to avoid this they drink 2 - 3 litres daily.

They not only drink water, they also take isotonic solutions, which rehydrate especially well. These include a low dose of sodium, normally as salt and glucose, as well as potassium and other minerals which help to retain water, vital for the working of the human body.

And due to the tough riding conditions the riders usually carry a “camel back”, that is a water bottle with a capacity of 400ml., connected to the helmet by a tube which lets them drink while riding the bike, but many think that it is uncomfortable and so choose to eat and drink a lot before the race. To keep the body cool the riders have other features under their racing-suit, synthetic materials that allow the body to breathe more easily thanks to openings at certain points.

Physical preparation
To tackle a race with the conditions found in Malaysia the physical work is modified so that the riders improve their adaptation. The rider`s bio-rhythms and stamina are adapted to the extreme conditions, and simulations of what they will come across are made, for example work with more clothes being worn to raise the temperature, and riding at the hottest time of the day. Another way to prepare for the heat and humidity is to do 4 or 5 sessions in the sauna the week before the race.

Just as important is to manage the rest periods correctly. Not only is it necessary to sleep a minimum of 8 hours, but during trips to countries like Japan, Australia, the USA and Malaysia, jet lag is always a threat. And so the riders often try to get used to the different time zones by changing their timetables to that of the race country(diurnal and nocturnal changes), and so accelerate the process of acclimatisation.

Being a professional rider means taking care of even the smallest details that can affect the race result, and so in addition to the set-up on the bike - suspension, chassis, tyre selection etc. Dani Pedrosa & Andrea Dovizioso must also take care of their bodies, perhaps more so than with their bikes. And therefore in addition to the team of mechanics they also have a team of physical trainers that plan and control their preparation for the whole season. Dani Simone has been working with Dani Pedrosa since he moved up to MotoGP in 2006, and Andrea Dovizioso has been supported by Yuri Naldini for the last 8 years.

eyeball friendly version :

Pedrosa with scalding top speed.
Stoner up 4.414Km/h on Lorenzo.
Suzukis in the top 10.
Hayden besting Kallio by 0.359sec.
Marco still thrashing Randy.
To52land out to lunch.

if the men with top speed hook up
as well as Lorenzo, it will be well
and truly on.
